Chapter Nine

Isabelle stared at her laptop screen, trying desperately to concentrate.

Impossible. All she saw, all she thought about was the way Dax made love to her, the way his body seemed to fit hers perfectly, the way he seemed to instinctively know exactly what pleasured her the most.

But she still didn’t have answers about Dax, only this time she had herself to blame for delaying the inquisition. After her shower she’d stood in front of the bedroom mirror combing her hair and mentally compiling the list of questions she was going to ask him. Then he’d walked in her room and she’d spotted him, his gorgeous body reclined against her doorway, his perfectly chiseled face smiling at her. In an instant her mind had gone to mush and her libido had taken over.

Her skin burned at the thought of how she’d responded to him this afternoon, the way she’d shouted out her need for him to fuck her harder, spank her, pull her hair. Who knew she had latent masochistic tendencies? She sure as hell didn’t know that about herself. Before Dax, the sexcapades she’d had were of the bland vanilla variety. Plain, routine, maybe a change in positions now and then, but nothing like the wild, no-holds-barred-beat-me-hurt-me-fuck-me-make-me-like-it saga she’d asked for. She chuckled at the phrase. Dax had certainly given her everything she’d wanted.

She picked up the document on her desk and fanned her heated face, forcing thoughts of Dax aside. Plugging in her laptop phone line, she checked her email, pulling the message from the Institute on free diving without oxygen tanks. She printed and scanned the report, not surprised at all to find that the world record for free diving didn’t come anywhere close to matching the length of time Dax had been submerged.

Dammit! With an angry flick of her wrist she tossed the document to the floor. She knew it, and yet she didn’t want it to be true. She’d hoped that perhaps Dax was some free diving world record holder, which would logically explain his ability to remain submerged for ten minutes or more. She knew enough about human biology to realize it wasn’t possible.

Not with a human, anyway. So, how did he manage it? What was he, an alien or something?

Back to the questions. Questions she’d not-so-subtly avoided by sucking his cock and fucking him this afternoon. She couldn’t do that forever. The marine biologist in her begged for answers to the mystery of Dax Seagrove. The woman in her was already emotionally involved with him.

Which spelled disaster no matter how many different ways she looked at it. He was a stranger, and at that she wasn’t even certain he was human. She knew nothing about him other than what she’d found out during the past few days, which wasn’t too damn much.

Just like her mother, she’d fallen for a man she shouldn’t have fallen for. But unlike her mother, she wouldn’t spend her life wishing for something that wasn’t going to happen. She refused to live her life with an aching heart.
